SMTP AUTH is necessary for third party email clients, which is also documented in [the referenced article](https://aka.ms/smtp_auth_disabled).
So, basically this means that Microsoft is pushing you to their own products. Isn't this a bit of a monopoly?
A workaround for this problem is using the quick setup wizard and selecting *Outlook* instead of *Office 365*.
To use an Outlook, Live or Hotmail account with two factor authentication enabled, you might need to create an app password.
